Keine Frage: Handpans sind mega-in!
Der pulsierende Wohlklang dieser Ende der 1990er Jahre entwickelten Instrumente verzaubert eine bis heute immer größer werdende Community rhythmusbegeisterter Klang-Enthusiasten rund um den Erdball. Allerorten findet man Handpan-Seminare, Handpan-Showrooms, Handpan-Yoga, Handpan-Festivals und Konzerte. In vielen Fußgängerzonen sieht und hört man Handpan-Spieler*innen, die selbstvergessen improvisierend einer andächtig lauschenden Schar verzauberter Zuhörer gegenübersitzen.
Die Faszination besteht in der einzigartigen Spielanlage der Handpan, die es ermöglicht, mit einfachen rhythmischen Bewegungsmustern eine Vielzahl von Melodien, Akkorden und Grooves zu erzeugen und diese improvisierend miteinander zu verbinden.
Wie aber schreibt man ein Lehrbuch für ein Instrument, auf dem eigentlich Jede(r) nur improvisieren will?
Dieses Buch nähert sich der Frage auf zweierlei Weise: Zum einen gibt es nach Themengruppen gegliederte Anleitungen zum freien Kombinieren und Variieren von vorher gelernten Grooves und kurzen Melodien. Zum anderen gibt es zu jeder Themengruppe abschließende Übungsstücke, „Etüden“ genannt, in denen die vorher gezeigten Inhalte musikalisch miteinander verknüpft werden.
Im letzten Abschnitt folgen 16 leichte bis mittelschwere Kompositionen für Handpan, die zumeist solo oder in kleinen Gruppen gespielt werden können.
Alle in Tabulatur dargestellten Melodien, Grooves, Etüden und Kompositionen liegen sowohl in der schriftlichen Darstellung als auch in Form eines Lernvideos vor, das über einen neben der Tabulatur platzierten QR-Code mit dem Smartphone abgerufen werden kann.
Der Autor
Conny Sommer ist professioneller Percussionist und lebt in Leipzig. Bereits in den 1990er Jahren interessierte er sich für tonale Instrumente wie Kalimba, Balafon, Marimba und Hang, den Vorläufer der Handpan und integrierte diese in seine künstlerische Arbeit.
1999 veröffentlichte er das erste auf deutsch erschienene Lehrbuch für Cajon. Später folgten diverse Lehr- und Repertoire-Bücher sowie DVDs für Cajon, Mixed Percussion, Kalimba und Sansula.
Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Musiker und Autor gibt Conny Sommer zahlreiche Workshops für Cajon, Percussion, Kalimba, Sansula und Handpan.

Too often the sound was too harsh, too metallic, too fluttery, lacking heart in tone, lacking tranquility in the room. Even with big names.

So I continued my search. I listened, played, compared, and discarded. For a long time. Patiently. Until I found my partner: a sound maker in Hong Kong who follows the same path—away from mass production, towards dedication, research, and presence.
With their small team, our instruments are created there. Not quickly. Not in series. But in silence, perseverance, and a genuine love for sound.
This is how our sound is created: from encounter, selection, trust and the will to only pass on what truly touches the heart.
